What is Food Bank Thursdays?

A Neighbourhood Coming Together

Poverty knows no boundaries. Food Bank Thursdays is a College Park and River Oaks community initiative brought to you by Liz Polak, an Oakville resident, Community Advocate & a REALTOR® since 2014, who believes in giving back to the community. Food Bank Thursdays is a Food Drive for Kerr Street Mission in Oakville. The project began in early 2021, in Joshua Creek and Wedgewood Creek neighbourhoods with one of my friends and colleagues, and has since spread to other parts of Town. This initiative is a way to help those in Oakville who are struggling during trying times. This contact-free food drive has been embraced be many households who have been generously contributing since its inception. We have seen the power of community as we collectively donate to those in need.

How do Food Bank Thursdays work?

Leave a Donation On Your Front Steps

On the first Thursday of every month, a neighbour volunteer for your street will come by between 3pm-6pm in order to collect any bags of non-perishable food items that you leave out on your front steps. Our volunteers encompass all sectors of our community, ranging from students to seniors.

** It is helpful if you leave your items in a location that is visible from the street and in packaging that is unlikely to be confused with a delivery.

If you have any questions you can contact: Liz Polak at 905-617-3556 or at liz.polak@century21.ca

Will I receive a reminder?

Yes

Food Bank Thursdays

Up coming Food Bank Thursdays collection date reminder.

Your street volunteer will leave a post-it note reminder on your

front door a few days prior to each pick up.

** We understand if you do not wish to receive reminders – please tape a note to

your front door on the pick-up date and we will remove your house from receiving subsequent reminders.

What if my donation is missed?

Please let us know!

We do our best to collect every item that is left out, but it happens occasionally that an item is missed or that work/family/school impacts a volunteer’s timing. We apologize in advance should this happen as your contribution is valued. Please reach out to Liz if your donation is still there at 7pm and we will make sure to have someone pick it up. No bag gets left behind.

Are there particular items required?

All non-perishable food and toiletries

Although all non-perishable food items and toiletries are always needed and appreciated, there are times when there is an urgent need for particular items. In these instances, we will try to update through our webpage www.foodbankthursdays.ca and Facebook College Park Community group, or you can visit Kerr Street Mission website for announcements. We monitor the needs of several local charities and occasionally may allocate items as requested.

What streets are part of Food Bank Thursdays initiative?

All streets in Collage Park & River Oaks as well as in Glenorchy area, that have volunteer Street Ambassadors.

More streets to be added soon.

Where do the food donations go to?

The primary recipient of the Food Donations is the Kerr Street Mission.

Food Bank Thursdays Initiative is brought to the community by
